Doctorate in Applied Psychophysiology
with Specializations in
Optimal Performance
or
Clinical Applied Psychophysiology

This is the only doctoral program in Applied Psychophysiology in the world. The program is approved by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and meets the requirements for doctoral programs in Applied Psychophysiology set by the field’s professional organization, AAPB (Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback). Our program includes accredited courses by the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA) and the QEEG Certification board (QEEGCB) for certification as well as courses approved as continuing education hours for recertification.

Clinical Applied Psychophysiology Specialization: The Clinical Specialization is designed for people who already have Master’s degrees and appropriate licenses or certifications to practice in clinical areas. The specialization provides the knowledge needed to be a true professional in psychophysiological assessment and intervention for clinical problems without requiring you to leave your parent profession. Typical students include MDs, psychology PhDs, counselors, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, and MFTs.

You will learn to assess and train people with dysfunctions of physiological systems. Students in our program learn to use knowledge of biological bases of behavior to assess their clients’ behavioral and physical problems and then correct them through the use of psychophysiologically oriented behavioral interventions.

Optimal Functioning Applied Psychophysiology Specialization: The Optimal Functioning Specialization is designed for people who already have Master’s degrees and appropriate licenses or certifications to practice in education, coaching, or clinical areas. The degree provides the knowledge you need to be a true professional in psychophysiological assessment and intervention for optimal functioning in sports, education, business, etc. without requiring you to leave your parent profession. You’ll learn about psychophysiological techniques for helping students, athletes, business leaders, and many others to assess then help people focus better, breathe more efficiently, control stress responses, control their muscle tension, think more effectively, etc. by using techniques such as biofeedback, neurofeedback, hypnosis, and many others.

How you learn:

Our students learn by
* attending pre-recorded lectures and reading texts and articles,
* attending 3 annual conferences,
* individual mentoring by our faculty,
* doing several research projects including a doctoral dissertation under the guidance of highly experienced faculty, and
* attending live, real time, seminars and talks during which students and instructors interact. It’s almost like being there in person.
Students also have access to their instructors through email and phone.

  1. Click HERE for examples of prerecorded lectures.
  2. Three annual conferences: January and August Residential Conferences in beautiful Monterrey, California and the AAPB conference, usually in the spring throughout the country where practicum labs respective to courses, and other seminars and workshops are provided.
  3. Arrange for your personalized mentoring with the faculty of your choice.
  4. Multiple coursework is available for research and dissertation experience.
  5. Live Seminars

At Saybrook, students are professionals and are treated as colleagues, allowing for plenty of exchange of ideas.
Our dissertation planning seminars are especially interactive as our students join their ideas to build better research projects.
Students also attend talks by Saybrook faculty and outside speakers. As well, real time special interest groups permit students to interact around topics of interest to them.
Students have access to a fine on-line library.

What you learn:

Typical courses include: neurofeedback, QEEG, general biofeedback, hypnosis, optimal functioning, stimulation technologies, pelvic floor disorders, heart rate variability biofeedback, stress management, research, neuroanatomy and physiology, behavioral genetics, hormonal influences on behavior, etc.

Certifications: When you graduate, depending on the selection of courses you take, you can be certified in hypnosis (ASCH), general biofeedback (BCIA), QEEG (QEEGCB), neurofeedback (BCIA), pelvic floor biofeedback (BCIA), and mental health coaching.

Our students: Our students include coaches, teachers, and all types of clinicians. They come from the US and Canada as well as from many nations beyond. All excel in their fields. Many have already published and/or have patents in areas related to psychophysiology.

We have no interest in people who just want a degree. We want bright, creative people who intend to be stars in applied psychophysiology and intend to continue to move the field forward through research. To enter the program you need at least a 3.0 average at your most recent regionally accredited school, proof that you can write at the college level, and, via interview, show our selection committee that you are committed to applied psychophysiology.

Our faculty: The faculty and advisors in Applied Psychophysiology and its sister program, Mind Body Medicine are true experts in their fields. They are the best collection of applied psychophysiology teachers and researchers you can find in one college anywhere!

  • Applied psychophysiology & biofeedback: Six of our faculty have been president of AAPB with two others presidents of regional societies and sections and one editor of its news journal.
  • Hypnosis: One president of ASCH and two presidents of APA’s hypnosis section.
  • Research based publications: In top notch peer reviewed journals: Over 800 publications equal to any standards which moved our fields forward!
  • Grants: from every major Federal Agency and many private groups to perform actual research using subjects in high quality studies – Our faculty has been awarded over 100 million dollars to provide advancement of our field.
  • Contacts: If we don’t have the expertise in your area of interest, we know the top people in the field who can work with you.

This is the program for you if you want to become a professional in

Psychophysiological Self-Regulation

Join our unique distance based (with several weeks of in-person training) Doctoral Program in In Psychology with a specialization in Applied Psychophysiology.

You learn from your home / office by watching lectures and participating in live seminars and classes as well as getting together three times per year for lots of hands-on work and bonding.

This is where you learn about biofeedback; neurofeedback; optimal functioning in sports and education; and psychophysiological assessment and interventional techniques to enhance optimal functioning and control dysfunctions leading to such problems as pain headache, stress, ADHD, and lots more.

A unique program: This is the only doctoral program in applied psychophysiology in the world at this time. It meets the guidelines for doctoral programs in applied psychophysiology set by our international professional organization – Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB).

Psychophysiology & Applied Psychophysiology

Description: bfb ther 006Psychophysiology is the branch of psychology centering on the physiological bases of human psychological processes. It is the study of the biological bases of behavior among humans. Applied psychophysiology is the subspecialty of psychophysiology which uses knowledge of the biological bases of various behaviors in conjunction with various psychological techniques to help people optimize their behaviors. Applied psychophysiologists are psychologists who develop and use psychological interventions based on such areas as behavioral genetics, hormonal influence on behavior, individual differences in perception, and abnormal physiological patterns to assist clients to recognize and alter problems caused by these biological underpinnings. Common psychophysiological intervention techniques include biofeedback, relaxation training, entrainment, hypnosis, and many others.

This program teaches students to assess and assist both (a) reasonably well functioning people to perform better through behavioral control of their physiological systems and (b) people “sick” from dysfunctions of physiological systems. Students in our program learn to be research oriented psychophysiologists who know how to use knowledge of biological bases of behavior to assess their clients’ behavioral and physical problems and then correct them through the use of psychophysiologically oriented behavioral interventions.

How you learn

The students in our hybrid distance (about 90% and in person (about 10%) learn by attending (1) pre-recorded lectures, (2) in-person laboratories and lectures three times per year (for about a week each), and (3) live – real time – seminars during which students and instructors can see and hear each other. They read texts and articles as well. Students also have access to their instructors through email and phone. Students have access to a comprehensive on-line library.

This is what a live seminar looks like:
The “screen shot” to the right shows an instructor and three students interacting in real time while looking at discussion material on their screens. Students are treated as colleagues so there is plenty of exchange of ideas. Our dissertation planning seminars are especially interactive as our students join their ideas to build better research projects. In-person training laboratories: Our students and faculty gather three times per year for in-person “hands-on” training in psychophysiological assessment and intervention techniques.
