AAPB and BCIA
The Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB) is the professional organization which supports both applied psychophysiological recording and biofeedback based interventions.
You can find a tremendous amount of information about biofeedback and applied psychophysiology, about the evidence supporting biofeedback based interventions, and even find a provider by going to the association’s web site www.aapb.org.
AAPB has is a great organization to join if you are active in this field. Members include teachers, coaches, clinicians, researchers, and many others. AAPB's annual meeting is a great place to meet people active in the field, to learn about the latest advances, and see just about all of the neat equipment.
The Biofeedback Certification Institute of America is the premier way for clinicians to show that they have had at least minimal training in biofeedback. Clinicians can be certified in general biofeedback, neurofeedback (EEG biofeedback), or pelvic muscle dysfunctions biofeedback. There are other certification groups in biofeedback but the Foundation has not assessed their quality.
For more information about AAPB and BCIA, within the US you can call 800 477 8892. Outside the US, please call (303) 422-8436/2615. You can also e-mail them at aapb@resourcenter.org (for AAPB) or bcia@resourcenter.org (for BCIA).
People seeking biofeedback services may wish to go to AAPB’s web site to find out more about biofeedback and to check the depth of research supporting the type of service desired. Practitioners with training in the service desired can be identified on both AAPB’s and BCIA's sites.
People seeking biofeedback services may wish to ask the potential provider about their training in biofeedback. This training requires months (not days) of extra study.
Please note that very few clinicians are trained in biofeedback as part of their normal clinical training so extra study is required to achieve competence in biofeedback.
