Pain Assessment and Intervention from a Psychophysiological Perspective by R. Sherman.

Published in 2004 by the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. People using behaviorally oriented techniques such as biofeedback to evaluate and treat clinical problems whose main characteristic is pain need to understand the mechanisms underlying pain, how to perform meaningful assessments, how to optimize the use of behavioral tools to produce effective interventions, what to watch out for when working with complex patients, and how behavioral interventions fit in with other common strategies for assessing and treating pain. This book begins by describing the physiological and psychophysiological mechanisms underlying acute and chronic pain. It then explains how to use psychophysiological techniques to provide unique information crucial to assessing many pain problems. Readers will learn crucial warning signs to watch for in apparently appropriate patients. It also details how to perform behavioral interventional strategies such as biofeedback, relaxation training, etc. to treat pain problems including headache, low back pain, raynauds syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, non-cardiac chest pain, and many others. The book delves into typical pharmacological, surgical, and alternative (hypnosis, massage, chiropractic, therapeutic touch, etc.) approaches to pain evaluation and control. By the end of the book, readers should be sufficiently familiar with the typical approaches to pain assessment and control used by the medical community to know how behavioral treatments and assessments fit into the overall program and to permit good communication with medical colleagues around pain related issues. Sample protocols for treatment of migraine and tension headache as well as upper and lower back pain are detailed and provided.

Clinical Research: Skills Clinicians need to assess credibility and test their own work by R. Sherman.

Published in 2003 by the Behavioral Medicine R&T Foundation. Cost: $80.
This is the book which clinicians can use to teach themselves (a) to recognize when that shinny new treatment just coming over the hill, or even one of the old standards, is actually effective and (b) to perform simple data gathering to test the efficacy of their own therapies.
